John TORNGA for Dunedin MAYOR

 

John’s Resume


John's background, worldwide leadership and business experience includes a BA in Economics from Calvin University. Upon graduation, John was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps where he served in various positions including as a Company Commander in Vietnam.


Following his U.S. Marine Corps active service, John attended Michigan State University where he received an MBA in business (a Masters in Business Administration), and where he met Debra, his wife. John’s business career began immediately after Graduate School with the corporate office of AMF Inc., a financially focused Fortune 100 company.

 

John held various positions including Vice President of Marketing and Sales, AMF Head Ski and Tennis, and Vice President of AMF Head, Europe, where they lived in Austria for 5 years and where their children, Rory, and Travis, were born.


John has served in several positions in other companies including the Vice President of Business Development for a computer simulation company, a Chief Operating Officer of Bard International, and a Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Ortho-Kinetics, a medical equipment company.


In 1990 John and Deb moved to Dunedin, FL where John was a Founder and President of Capital Data Consulting Inc., providing computer programming services to various clients, including manufacturing companies and banks in the US.


John became active in Dunedin, and their children were schooled in Dunedin, Rory graduated from Florida Southern College, and Travis graduated From USF (Travis served in the US Marine Corps). The family is focused on and supports strong Family values.


Prior to being elected to the Dunedin City Commission, John served on various Dunedin City Boards and Committees including as the Chair of the Board of Finance, the Community Redevelopment Area Advisory Committee, Chair of the Waterfront Task Force, the Dunedin Council of Organizations and on Dunedin's Safety Committee.


John was elected and served as a Dunedin Commissioner, from 2014- 2018, and again for a second term which will conclude in 2024, when John will seek election as the Mayor of Dunedin. John served as Dunedin’s Vice Mayor in 2018, and again in 2023.


As a Dunedin Commissioner John has served as Dunedin’s representative on Forward Pinellas, previously the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the Pinellas Planning Council (PPC). He was appointed by Forward Pinellas to serve as one of their three representatives on the Tampa Bay’s Transportation Management Area Leadership Group representing Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco County’s.


He also served as Forward Pinellas’ representative on the Pinellas Trail Security Task Force. John served as Dunedin’s representative on Pinellas County PSTA Board, where he served on their Planning Committee and their Legislative Committee. He served on the Florida League of Cities Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations Policy Committee and on their Administrative Committee.


John has also served on the Suncoast League of Cities where the focus is on issues within our physical location in Florida and served as Dunedin’s Commission liaison to the Dunedin Golf Club and to Dunedin Cares.


John played a significant role in ensuring that the Sheriff’s Office remained in Dunedin, and in the formation of the US Military Veterans Committee and is a strong supporter of intra-Dunedin transportation..


Additionally, John serves as the President of the Spanish Trails Home Owners Association, and as their Chair of the Neighborhood Watch. John is a long-time active member of the Dunedin United Methodist Church, where he has served as their lay leader and as a Certified Lay Speaker, a Sunday School teacher and as a member of many of their boards and committees, including as the Chair of Finance.


John is active in several other organizations. He is a Life Member of the Dunedin Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), a member of the Dunedin American Legion, the Military Officer’s Association of Pinellas, a Board member and Officer of Honor Flight, and a Life Member of the Dunedin Boat Club.


He is a Life Member of the Friends of the Library, a member of Dunedin Fine Arts Center, the Dunedin Museum, Friends of the Island Parks, as a Volunteer Mentor in Dunedin High School, and as a Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Dunedin North, where he has served as their President.
Other organizations that John has been a member include the Optimist Club, the Elks Club, and the US Military Vets Motorcycle Club.
